Put #goldcoast on a post from a Chicago boutique and it joins 11 million others, and not one of the related tags Instagram suggested for that name had Chicago in it³. Chicago hashtags have a trap built in: the neighbourhoods carry names that other places use too. On 5 October 2026 we measured 3,480 Chicago hashtags to find the forms that stay local¹.

How we sized them

A count is the number of public posts Instagram showed under a tag on the day we looked¹. We call a tag big from one million posts, mid from one hundred thousand, and niche below that. Size tells you how crowded a tag is and nothing else.

The city tags

The seven city-wide tags, measured on 5 October 2026²:

#chi looks like a short form of the city. When we searched it, the largest related tags Instagram suggested were #chihuahua at 40M posts, #chic at 38M and #chicken at 38M². Leave it out and use #chitown or #windycity for the nickname.

Neighbourhood names that are not only Chicago

The plain neighbourhood names, biggest first³:

The five at the top are big because they are shared. Instagram's own suggestions show with whom:

• #goldcoast has 11M posts, and none of its suggested tags named Chicago³.
• #oldtown has 9.5M posts, and its suggestions included #oldtownalexandria at 391K, #oldtownscottsdale at 383K and #dubrovnikoldtown at 337K³.
• #hydepark has 2.6M posts, and among its suggestions #hydeparklondon at 114K is larger than #hydeparkchicago at 100K³.
• #pilsen has 1.3M posts, and the largest tag suggested with it was #pilsener at 181K³.
• #theloop has 254K posts, and its suggestions were phrases such as #intheloop at 66K and #closetheloop at 53K³.

A post under any of these lands in a mixed crowd. The names further down the table are safer, and the next table is safer still.

Add the city and the tag turns local

The same neighbourhoods with Chicago in the tag, measured on the same day⁴:

Every Chicago form is a fraction of the plain one: #lincolnpark has 653K posts and #lincolnparkchicago 160K⁴. The smaller number is the useful one, because the tag itself says which Lincoln Park it means.

Two details are worth knowing. Downtown's own tag is tiny: #theloopchicago has 6.5K posts, while #westloopchicago has 145K and #southloopchicago 107K⁴. And the sides of the city are uneven: #southsidechicago has 179K posts and #northsidechicago 38K⁴.

Suburb tags

For a business outside the city limits, measured on 5 October 2026⁵:

The suburbs follow the same rule with the state in place of the city: #evanstonillinois has 68K posts against 433K on #evanston⁵. Pair the town's tag with #chicagosuburbs or #chicagoland.

Trade tags by business type

In our Los Angeles list the nickname often beats the full name. Chicago trades run the other way. The full city name carries the trade tags, and the nickname versions are small, as the food and hair tables below show.

Food and drink

Measured on 5 October 2026⁶:

#chitownfood has 58K posts beside 1.7M on #chicagofood⁶. A cafe or bakery has the most room on the three niche tags that name what it sells.

Hair, beauty and tattoo

Measured on 5 October 2026⁷:

#chicagohairstylist is the largest Chicago trade tag we measured, ahead of #chicagofood⁷. Most of this group is mid-sized, so a salon or a lash studio can use two of them and add its neighbourhood.

Real estate

Measured on 5 October 2026⁸:

All five are mid-sized⁸. An agent who works the suburbs has a tag made for it in #chicagolandrealestate.

Fitness

Measured on 5 October 2026⁹:

The shorter #chicagotrainer is larger than #chicagopersonaltrainer, at 121K posts against 80K⁹.

Art, music, events and weddings

Measured on 5 October 2026¹⁰:

The wedding tags are large: the photographer tag alone has 557K posts¹⁰.

Small business and shop local

Measured on 5 October 2026¹¹:

Word order changes the size: #chicagosmallbusiness has 191K posts and #smallbusinesschicago 40K¹¹.

Tags with Chicago in the name that are about something else

Among the related tags Instagram suggested for #chicago were several that have nothing to do with a neighbourhood shop:

• #chicagobulls at 2.2M posts, #chicagobears at 949K and #chicagocubs at 930K are sports teams².
• #chicagofire at 518K and #chicagopd at 414K are also the titles of television dramas².

They are fan tags. Leave them to the fans.

A set for one post

Instagram allows up to 5 tags on a post, and posts from a private profile do not appear publicly on hashtag pages, so check that your account is public first¹².

For example, a taqueria in Pilsen could use #pilsenchicago for the neighbourhood, #chicagofood as its one big tag, #chicagorestaurants for the trade and #shoplocalchicago to say it is an independent⁴. That is four tags: one big, two mid and one niche.
