2,384Los Angeles hashtags measured on one day1

8.2Mposts on #dtla, four times #downtownla3
6.3Kposts on #supportlocalla9

#losangeles carries 93 million posts and #hollywood 45 million2. Anyone, anywhere, can tag a photo of the sign or the beach with either. A business in Glendale or Long Beach needs the tags its own customers use, and in Los Angeles those follow the city people live in and the nicknames they call it. We measured 2,384 LA hashtags on 3 October 2026 to sort the useful ones from the noise1.

A county of 88 cities

Los Angeles County has 9.8 million residents living across 88 cities10. People here tag where they actually are: Pasadena, Burbank, Silver Lake, Long Beach. The biggest place names, measured2:

Hashtag Posts Size
#losangeles 93M big
#hollywood 45M big
#dtla 8.2M big
#santamonica 7.8M big
#longbeach 7.7M big
#beverlyhills 7.2M big
#malibu 6.7M big
#venicebeach 4.5M big

Several of these are names known around the world. That fame is what makes them crowded, and hard ground for a local salon or contractor.

Below them sit the cities and neighbourhoods where a business can be known by name. Measured on the same day3:

Hashtag Posts Size
#pasadena 3.6M big
#glendale 2.3M big
#westhollywood 2.2M big
#downtownla 2M big
#weho 1.8M big
#burbank 1.7M big
#silverlake 1.4M big
#highlandpark 1.2M big
#sanfernandovalley 1.1M big
#culvercity 985K mid
#echopark 937K mid
#northhollywood 828K mid
#koreatown 729K mid
#lacounty 487K mid
#eaglerock 454K mid
#koreatownla 119K mid

In Los Angeles the nickname often wins

Angelenos shorten their places, and the short names have become tags of their own. #dtla has 8.2M posts, about four times #downtownla at 2M, and #weho at 1.8M is close behind #westhollywood at 2.2M3. Adding the city's letters shrinks a tag instead: #koreatownla has 119K posts against 729K on #koreatown3, just as in our New York list a neighbourhood tag with the borough added is the smaller one. Check both forms of a name before you post, use the one your customers write, and keep a small one in the set.

Tags that are not only Los Angeles

Some of the biggest names here are shared with other places, so a post tagged with them lands in a mixed crowd:

  • #longbeach has 7.7M posts, and Long Beach is also a city in New York2.
  • #glendale has 2.3M posts, and Glendale is also a city in Arizona3.
  • #pasadena has 3.6M posts, and Pasadena is also a city in Texas3.
  • #lafitness has 1.9M posts, and it is also the name of a national gym chain, LA Fitness7. An independent studio does better with #lagym or #lapersonaltrainer.

None of this makes them useless. It means they work best beside a tag only a local would use.

Trade tags by business type

Food and drink

Measured on 3 October 20264:

Hashtag Posts Size
#lafoodie 1.9M big
#laeats 1.6M big
#lafood 758K mid
#losangelesfood 519K mid
#larestaurants 159K mid
#lacoffee 73K niche
#dtlafood 51K niche

The smallest two are the most useful for a single spot: #dtlafood at 51K names both the trade and the district4.

Hair, beauty and tattoo

Measured on 3 October 20265:

Hashtag Posts Size
#lahairstylist 2.1M big
#lahair 1.6M big
#lanails 774K mid
#labarber 667K mid
#latattoo 351K mid
#lamakeup 103K mid
#lasalon 99K niche

#lasalon is the only niche tag in the group at 99K, while the stylist tag passes two million5. A salon that wants its chairs filled has more room on the smaller one.

Real estate

Measured on 3 October 20266:

Hashtag Posts Size
#losangelesrealestate 896K mid
#larealestate 626K mid
#larealtor 339K mid

Here the full city name is the bigger tag: #losangelesrealestate leads #larealestate by about 270K posts6. All three are mid-sized, so an agent can use two of them together.

Fitness

Measured on 3 October 20267:

Hashtag Posts Size
#lafitness 1.9M big
#lagym 23K niche
#lapersonaltrainer 16K niche

Outside the chain's tag, Los Angeles fitness tags are small, which is good news for a trainer or a studio: a post on #lapersonaltrainer competes with few others7.

Art, nightlife, music and weddings

Measured on 3 October 20268:

Hashtag Posts Size
#laart 807K mid
#lanightlife 473K mid
#laevents 415K mid
#lamusic 378K mid
#lawedding 287K mid
#laweddingphotographer 245K mid
#ladj 49K niche

Small business and shop local

Measured on 3 October 20269:

Hashtag Posts Size
#lasmallbusiness 20K niche
#shoplocalla 18K niche
#smallbusinessla 12K niche
#supportlocalla 6.3K niche

Every shop-local tag we measured in Los Angeles is under twenty thousand posts9. A post there is easy to find for the few people looking.

A set for one post

Instagram now caps a post at 5 hashtags11. For example, a barbershop in Highland Park posting a fresh fade could use #highlandpark for the neighbourhood, #eaglerock for the one next door, #labarber for the trade and #lasmallbusiness to reach people who browse for independents3. That is four tags, one of them big, three of them closer to home.

From hashtags to followers

A hashtag waits for someone to browse it. Growth reaches out instead. When you start with us you name the places and tags your customers use, the local pages they read and the businesses near you they already follow, and your manager works through those lists from your account13. People who get that attention look at your profile, and the ones who like it follow you.

Start with the Los Angeles page, see how it works, or compare the plans.

Questions

At most as your one big tag. It carries 93 million posts, more than any other Los Angeles tag we measured, so a single post there is one among a very large crowd2.

Same place, different crowd size: #dtla has 8.2M posts and #downtownla 2M3. Pick the one your own customers use in their captions.

Five. Instagram's @creators account set the limit at up to 5 per post or reel on 18 December 202511.
