A tag with 155 million posts will not bring a New York bakery its next regular customer2. The NYC hashtags that do are smaller and closer to home: the neighbourhood, the food scene, the trade. To find them we measured 2,419 New York hashtags on Instagram on 3 October 2026 and sorted them by size1. Use the tables below to build a set for your own business in a few minutes.

How to read the numbers

Each number is the count of public posts Instagram showed for that tag on the day we measured it1. The count tells you how crowded a tag is. It does not tell you how good it is.

  • Big means a million posts or more. Your post is one of a crowd from the same hour, from accounts anywhere that like the city.
  • Mid means between a hundred thousand and a million posts. Busy enough to be browsed, small enough to stay visible for a while.
  • Niche means under a hundred thousand posts. The tag names a place or a trade closely, which is usually what a local customer searches.

A strong set for a local business leans on mid and niche tags and uses one big tag at most. One more rule before you start: posts from a private account do not appear on hashtag pages at all, so these tags only work for a public account13.

The city-wide tags

The five biggest New York tags we measured2:

Hashtag Posts Size
#nyc 155M big
#newyork 146M big
#newyorkcity 38M big
#brooklyn 35M big
#manhattan 25M big

Look at who else is posting there. When we searched #nyc, the related tags Instagram suggested were led by photography and food: #nycphotographer has 4.5M posts and #nyceats 4.3M1. On these tags a dentist in Midtown is competing with every photographer, tourist and food account in the city. Pick one of them if you want a city marker, and let the smaller tags do the work.

Borough tags

The boroughs are big tags too, but each has a variant with far fewer posts2:

Hashtag Posts Size
#queens 14M big
#bronx 7.7M big
#harlem 4.5M big
#statenisland 3.5M big
#queensny 861K mid
#brooklynny 383K mid
#bronxny 333K mid

The mid forms (#queensny, #brooklynny, #bronxny) are a good second tag for any business with a storefront in that borough2.

Neighbourhood tags

This is where a local business belongs. The neighbourhood tags we measured, biggest first3:

Hashtag Posts Size
#soho 6M big
#williamsburg 3M big
#dumbo 2.8M big
#astoria 2.1M big
#bushwick 1.8M big
#eastvillage 1.6M big
#westvillage 1.2M big
#uppereastside 1.2M big
#lowereastside 1.1M big
#greenpoint 922K mid
#upperwestside 834K mid
#longislandcity 748K mid
#parkslope 725K mid
#flushing 529K mid
#sohonyc 385K mid
#ridgewood 337K mid
#astoriaqueens 317K mid
#jacksonheights 292K mid
#williamsburgbrooklyn 243K mid
#harlemnyc 147K mid
#bushwickbrooklyn 91K niche

Two things stand out. First, #soho is not only New York: #soholondon has its own 235K posts and #sohonyc 385K, so the plain tag mixes two cities3. A shop on Prince Street does better with #sohonyc. Second, several neighbourhoods have a longer form that is far smaller and more local, such as #williamsburgbrooklyn at 243K against #williamsburg at 3M3. Williamsburg is also a town in Virginia, which the longer form avoids.

Trade tags by business type

These pair the city with what you do. Use the one that matches your business, then add a neighbourhood tag.

Food and drink

Measured on 3 October 20264:

Hashtag Posts Size
#nyceats 4.3M big
#nycfood 3M big
#nycfoodie 2.5M big
#nycrestaurants 935K mid
#brooklynfood 153K mid
#nyccoffee 139K mid
#bronxfood 105K mid
#queensfood 54K niche
#astoriafood 25K niche
#harlemfood 17K niche

The borough food tags (#bronxfood, #queensfood, #astoriafood) are where a neighbourhood restaurant is seen by people who eat nearby.

Hair, beauty and tattoo

Measured on 3 October 20265:

Hashtag Posts Size
#nychairstylist 2.4M big
#brooklynhairstylist 1.1M big
#nychair 746K mid
#nycnails 707K mid
#nyctattoo 691K mid
#nycstylist 670K mid
#nycsalon 290K mid
#brooklynhair 228K mid
#nycbarber 190K mid
#nycmakeup 150K mid
#brooklynsalon 105K mid
#nycbarbers 56K niche
#nycbarbershop 23K niche

The stylist's own tag is far bigger than the generic one: #nychairstylist has 2.4M posts against 746K on #nychair5. It is the busier of the two. For a salon that wants clients nearby, the salon and borough tags are smaller and more local.

Real estate

Measured on 3 October 20266:

Hashtag Posts Size
#nycrealestate 1.2M big
#nycapartment 169K mid
#nycrealtor 168K mid

#nycapartment names what a renter or buyer is looking for, while #nycrealtor names the job6. For a listing, lead with the first.

Fitness

Measured on 3 October 20267:

Hashtag Posts Size
#nycfitness 461K mid
#nycpersonaltrainer 102K mid
#nycgym 26K niche

Fitness tags in New York are smaller than you might expect, which makes them usable for a single studio7. Our fitness studio case study walks through one US location of a franchise: 141 new followers in a slow month with eight posts, and what it changed next11.

Events, music and weddings

Measured on 3 October 20268:

Hashtag Posts Size
#nycnightlife 1.3M big
#nycevents 1.1M big
#nycwedding 651K mid
#nycweddingphotographer 557K mid
#nycmusic 501K mid
#nycdj 121K mid

Nightlife is the biggest of the six, larger than events, weddings and music8.

Small business and shop local

Measured on 3 October 20269:

Hashtag Posts Size
#nycbusiness 106K mid
#nycsmallbusiness 103K mid
#brooklynbusiness 54K niche
#shoplocalnyc 37K niche
#smallbusinessnyc 36K niche
#brooklynsmallbusiness 20K niche
#supportlocalnyc 6.6K niche

The shop-local tags are much smaller than their reputation: #supportlocalnyc has fewer than seven thousand posts9. That makes them quiet, and the name of the tag says what its visitors came for: a local shop to support.

Building a set for one post

Instagram now allows up to 5 hashtags on a post or reel, and recommends a few targeted tags over many generic ones12. That makes every slot count.

For example, take a hair salon in Astoria posting a photo of a fresh cut. A strong set would be #astoriaqueens for the neighbourhood, #queensny for the borough, #nycsalon for the trade and #nychair as the one bigger tag5. Every tag says something true about the post, and three of the four are mid-sized, so the post stays visible to people nearby for longer.

The same logic works for any business. Pick one neighbourhood tag, one borough or city tag, one or two trade tags, and check each against the tables above before you post.

How local hashtags feed real growth

Hashtags help the people already browsing a tag find one of your posts. Growth works the other way round. Your manager goes to the people who are active on your local hashtags, local pages and the competitor accounts your customers already follow, and engages with them from your account10. They get a notification, look at your page, and follow back if they like what they see.

That is why the targeting step asks for your neighbourhood and your local tags10. If you are a New York business, start with the New York page, read how it works step by step, or compare the plans.

When these numbers change

Questions

Up to 5 on a post or reel13. Instagram's @creators account announced the limit on 18 December 2025, and the help center says the same12. Instagram also advises a few targeted tags over many generic ones12.

They help people who are interested in a topic find your post, but Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said in May 2024 that they won't necessarily increase your visibility14. Treat them as labels for the right people, not as a reach button.

No. Instagram removed hashtag following on 13 December 202415. People now reach a hashtag page by searching for it or tapping it on a post16.

Rarely on its own. With 155 million posts it is the most crowded tag we measured2. Use it as your one big tag at most, beside smaller local ones.
