New York City has more than 183,000 small businesses, the most it has ever had4. On Instagram most of them share the same crowded tags: #nyc alone carries 155 million posts2. Instagram growth for a New York business is not about reaching the city. It is about reaching the few thousand people in your borough and your neighbourhood who could become customers, and getting them to follow you.

Why New York growth is a neighbourhood game

The boroughs each have their own tag and their own crowd: #brooklyn has 35M posts, #queens 14M and #bronx 7.7M2. Below them are the neighbourhoods, where a local business is a familiar name rather than one more post: #astoria has 2.1M, #greenpoint 922K and #jacksonheights 292K3.

Those smaller tags, and the local accounts behind them, are where your next customers already spend time. They follow the coffee shop on their corner, the barber two blocks away and the realtor who posts their street. Growth that works in New York starts there, not on #nyc.

How growth works for a New York business

Your manager engages the most active people on the targets you pick: competitor accounts near you, local pages, and your neighbourhood's hashtags13. Those people see a real local account engaging with them, visit your profile, and some choose to follow13. There is no zip code switch; the area comes from the targets themselves14.

For example, take a coffee shop in Greenpoint. Its targets would be the cafes and bakeries its customers already follow in Greenpoint and Williamsburg, the neighbourhood pages, and tags such as #greenpoint and #williamsburgbrooklyn, which have 922K and 243K posts3. The people your manager reaches through those targets live or work within walking distance, which is the whole point.

To start, we need your Instagram login and 10 to 30 competitor accounts in your niche with 10K to 90K followers each15. For a New York business, pick them from your own borough first. Read how it works for the full process.

The businesses that fit the city

Restaurants, cafes and bakeries. The big food tags are crowded: #nyceats has 4.3M posts and #nycfood 3M5. The borough food tags are where a neighbourhood place gets noticed, such as #brooklynfood at 153K, #bronxfood at 105K and #queensfood at 54K5.

Salons, barbers and beauty. #nycsalon has 290K posts and #nycbarber 190K, small enough for one shop to stand out, and Brooklyn has its own #brooklynsalon at 105K6.

Real estate. #nycrealestate has 1.2M posts and #nycapartment 169K7. Our real estate case study follows an agency that started with seven followers and gained 737 since 2 July; we also made that account's posts, so the number is growth plus content11.

Trades and home services. Derek runs an HVAC, plumbing and electrical company and makes his own reels, while we run only the growth. His account gained 902 followers from 5 July10.

Gyms and studios. #nycfitness has 461K posts and #nycpersonaltrainer 102K8. Our fitness case study covers one US location of a franchise: 141 new followers in a slow month with eight posts, and the plan to fix it12.

Shops. #nycsmallbusiness has 103K posts and #shoplocalnyc 37K, which makes them quiet enough for a single store9.

The case studies are real accounts walked through on their own dashboards. They are not all in New York; they show how the same method works in each kind of business.

What to expect in a month

Growth depends on your industry, your content and how often you post, so keep posting while we work17. The plans page shows the follower ranges past clients saw in a month for each plan, and plans start at US$147 a month. Every case study walks through a real account on its own dashboard.

If you want to see the local tags first, our list of the best NYC hashtags has 2,419 of them measured and grouped by neighbourhood and trade1.

Questions

No. The targeting is built around where your customers are: one neighbourhood, a borough or the whole city, through local hashtags, local pages and the competitor accounts nearby14.

Not with a switch, and nobody can. Tell us the area you serve at setup and your manager works from its local hashtags, local pages and local influencers, which is how a local audience is narrowed down in practice14.

Yes. Growth depends on your industry, your content and how consistently you post. We never post, comment or message as you, so your feed stays yours17.

It can, and anyone who promises otherwise is guessing. The work is paced deliberately, and if Instagram flags your account the work stops the same day, waits 48 to 72 hours and resumes at a lower pace, with the paused days added at no charge16.
